The Bear State
History Lesson Time! One of Arkansas's earliest nicknames dates back to the 1850's when the early settlers coined "The Bear State" nickname because of the large number of Black Bears in the region.
Around the 1950's there was said to be only around 50 Black Bears in the area but thanks to the efforts or our good ol' Arkansas Game and Fish, there is estimated to be around 3,000 Black Bears roaming Arkansas today.
